Neue Auszeichnung für CHRIS HOPKINS 20. Verleihung des "JAZZ-POTT" Awards
Preisträgerkonzert mit "Echoes of Swing" im Essener Grillo Theater
Nachdem Chris Hopkins bereits unlängst mit dem "Keeper of the Flame" geehrt wurde, erhält er nun am 30. September 2017 im Essener Grillo-Theater den begehrten "Jazz-Pott"-Award. Die nunmehr zum 20. Mal verliehene Würdigung zeichnet jährlich unter dem Motto „best progressive artist“ innovative Jazzmusiker aus, darunter bisher solch unterschiedliche Künstler wie Paul Kuhn oder Nils Wogram.
Wie nur wenige ihrer Generation tragen der Bochumer Pianist und Altsaxofonist und das vor rund 20 Jahren gegründeten Ensemble-Team "Echoes of Swing" die Fackel des "Classic Jazz" weiter, den sie ohne jede Nostalgie in eine eigenständige und zeitgemäße Form weiterentwickelt haben.
In der Besetzung bestehend aus zwei Bläsern, Schlagzeug und Piano interpretiert die kompakte und wendige Formation Titel aus dem riesigen Fundus des swingenden Jazz und weit darüber hinaus. Klassiker aus dem „Great American Songbook" macht sich die Combo mit verblüffenden Arrangements und virtuosen Solobeiträgen zu eigen und ergänzt sie - stets mit einer guten Portion Humor gewürzt - durch ungewöhnliche Klassikadaptionen und ausdrucksstarke Eigenkompositionen. In jüngster Vergangenheit wurde das beim Plattenlabel ACT unter Vertrag stehende Ensemble vom US-Magazin Downbeat ausgezeichnet und erhielt u. a. in Paris den Prix de L'Académie du Jazz und den Grand Prix du Disque de Jazz sowie hierzulande den Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Neben Chris Hopkins komplettieren Trompeter Colin T. Dawson, Pianist Bernd Lhotzky und Schlagzeuger Oliver Mewes das Quartett.
Das „Jazz Pott"-Konzert mit Preisverleihung am 30. September 2017 um 20 Uhr im alt-ehrwürdigen Grillo-Theater, das in der kommenden Spielzeit gleichsam sein 125-jähriges Bestehen feiert, bildet den Saisonauftakt der Konzertreihe "Jazz in Essen" unter der künstlerischen Leitung des Autors Dr. Berthold Klostermann.
Bisherige Preisträger der 1998 vom Kunstförderer und Netzwerker Viktor Seroneit (1946-2011) und Niklaus Troxler ins Leben gerufene Auszeichnung sind u.a. Peter Weniger, Claudio Puntin, Paul Kuhn, Uri Caine, Dieter Ilg, Muthspiel & Muthspiel, Silke Eberhard, Frank Chastenier, Julia Hülsmann, Christof Lauer, Nils Wogram, Elina Duni, Angelika Niescier, Georg Graewe, Peter Herborn und Jochen Rückert.
